| Wastewater Treatment Plan Expansion |
In October 2009 construction began on the expansion of the Kerman wastewater treatment plant. The expansion would increase the design capacity of the plant from 1.2 million gallons per day to 2.0 MGD. The design and construction cost approximately 6.7 million dollars of which 2 million dollars was covered by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the remainder was financed by a State Revolving Fund loan at 1% interest to be repaid over 20 years. In October of 2011 a notice of completion was filed and the plant is currently operating as designed. Prior to the expansion, the plant’s effluent (treated water) was not meeting the discharge requirements set forth by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board. Now that the new plant is in operation the effluent is meeting the discharge requirements with margin to spare. Also included in the construction design provided by the engineering firm of Provost and Pritchard, were provisions to expand the plant capacity to treat a flow of 3.0 MGD. The need for this expansion is anticipated by the year 2025. |
